In your face Caterham - this is the Ariel Atom 500 and guess what?? it has exactly the same Russell Savoury-built 500bhp engine that the mental 7 that we featured on Tuesday. That means 2.4-litres of supercharged V8 which'll rev to 10,000rpm all squeezed into an even more scantily clad body. The Atom gets a Sadev sequential ’box which has flat shift capability and the same launch and traction controls.

The Atom 500 will be built in small numbers at Ariel’s new factory in Somerset, with the first cars hitting the road in the Spring. No performance figures or prices are available yet, apart from that the car has over 1000bhp per tonne, but expect it to be well up on the Atom 300’s sub 3-second times to 60mph and sub 7-second times to 100mph.
